Only Then

For then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Joshua 1:8b KJV

Part 2. We saw in yesterday’s devotion that Moses died and Joshua was chosen by God to continue with the assignment to lead the children of Israel into the promised land. Under Moses leadership Joshua was trained and prepared to finish the work.

There were some terms and conditions that Joshua must follow in order for them to possess the promise land. Realize I use the word ‘must’. With God there is no if’s and but’s or in between. There is only one thing that God works with and that is total obedience to what He says.

Let’s look at what God said to Joshua. Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses, Joshua 1:3 KJV. There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, Joshua 1:5 KJV. God promised Joshua total victory, total backing. It was a done deal from God’s side. However, there were some conditions that Joshua must fulfill.

Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper withersoever thou goest. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: Joshua 1:7-8a KJV. God told Joshua what was expected of him and the children of Israel if they were to possess the promise land.

God continued and said to Joshua, ‘for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success’. God said to Joshua, if you obey the terms and conditions, only then will Joshua and the children of Israel way be prosperous and have good success. Simply put together, there is no other way! The only way is complete obedience to what God said. God’s way was guaranteed victory! Saul was rejected from reigning over Israel because he disobeyed God’s commands. This is a warning for us. We cannot do our own thing. To possess our promise land, we must obey what God says!
